What can a production-stage OEM evaluate before sharing protected data?
The first scale review needs only ranges, system maturity, visible constraints, and the next decision. The initial quote request excludes production files.
When is a drone program ready to scale?
Validated demand is necessary but not sufficient. Product configuration, suppliers, material, work content, quality gates, test capacity, people, production data, release, and unit economics also need a credible path to the target rate.
How is production scale-up different from adding overflow capacity?
Overflow addresses a bounded, often time-sensitive output gap. Scale-up redesigns the persistent operating system required for a materially higher recurring rate. They are different buying problems even when they interact.
What should be measured before a ramp plan is built?
Measure the current configuration, product mix, accepted output, cycle time, work content, material readiness, first-pass yield, defects, rework, inspection, test utilization, staffing, release flow, and cost structure.
Does scaling require automation?
Not necessarily. Automation fits stable, repetitive, measurable work with a technical and economic basis. Fixtures, line balance, supplier changes, test redesign, standard work, or data visibility may matter first.
How do you keep quality from eroding as output rises?
Tie rate increases to controlled configuration, approved material and process, trained work, visible defects, inspection and test evidence, closed corrective action, complete records, and accepted output at the prior gate.
How should the supply chain change at higher volume?
Segment critical items by lead time, technical risk, source concentration, change sensitivity, quality history, and inventory exposure. Source qualification and material release should follow the ramp curve.
What if test is the primary bottleneck?
Model test as its own production system: equipment, fixtures, software, calibration, setup, cycle, queues, data review, failure analysis, retest, staffing, environment, and acceptance authority.
Can production be distributed across multiple sites or partners?
Yes, when configuration, process, training, material, inspection, test, records, nonconformance, corrective action, data, and release authority remain controlled. Replication without governance can multiply variation.
How are unit economics evaluated?
Separate material, labor, overhead, yield, scrap, rework, expedite, inventory, tooling, automation, test, warranty, and support. Connect every cost action to product control, quality, working capital, and recurring cost.
What information is needed for an initial scale review?
Start with current and target output ranges, target window, product stage, demand basis, configuration stability, manufacturing model, primary constraints, next decision, and measurements already available. Keep protected data outside the initial request.
